2. Look beyond the number of features

It's easy to compare NMES devices by counting programmes, waveforms or intensity levels. But more doesn't necessarily mean better.

You don't need to be an expert in electrical stimulation to compare devices. Instead, look for a therapy that has been thoughtfully designed for its intended purpose.

A well-designed NMES programme should be based on an understanding of how muscles respond to electrical stimulation, with the different elements of the therapy working together to deliver a purposeful, consistent therapy.

This is more meaningful than simply having a long list of technical specifications.

So, what about all those extra features?
A device having more waveforms, intensity levels or programmes doesn't automatically make it more effective.
Instead, ask:

Do the features have a clear purpose?

Are the programmes designed for a specific purpose?
Do the different settings offer useful choice rather than simply adding complexity?
Is the device straightforward enough to use regularly?

Ultimately, it's the design and purpose of the therapy that matter – not simply the length of the feature list.
