What was the study about?

Published in 2020, the clinical trial² was conducted by Babber et al. and leg by Professor Alun Davies at Imperial College London and Charring Cross Hospital.

The study focused on patients diagnosed with mild PAD³ who experienced intermittent claudication.

Researchers tested two groups: one following a supervised exercise programme (SEP) only, and another using SEP combined with Revitive. The aim was to see whether introducing Revitive could help people walk further before the onset of pain - and whether it could further improve quality of life beyond what traditional therapy offers.

The study took place in two stages:

A pilot study, involving 20 participants⁴
A randomised controlled trial (RCT) that followed the pilot, and included 42 participants⁴

Who took part?

A total of 57 people were tested across the pilot and RCT. In the RCT, typical participant characteristics included⁶:

Average age: 67
Diagnosed with PAD and intermittent claudication
Overweight (average BMI of 27)
Ex-smokers
Taking statins, with high blood pressure and high cholesterol

How was Revitive used?

Across both the pilot and the RCT, participants used Revitive daily for at least 30 minutes, at a strong but comfortable intensity – enough to visibly contract the calf muscles. For most people, this was a setting above intensity level 40.⁷

In the pilot study, all participants received their usual medical treatment plus Revitive
In the RCT, participants were divided into two groups:
1. Using SEP only
2. Using SEP + Revitive

Results were measured after 6 weeks of use.
